MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
DECEMBER 2008
Our annual meeting was well received by all in attendance, especially the hospitality shown to us by the Boltonville Fire Department. Our guest speaker, Rob Haswell of FOX 6 news, did an excellent job entertaining and informing us. We had a late start watching the Packers not do very well in overtime in what we all thought should have been a victory. Thank you to the non-Packer fans for bearing with us diehards.
Our seminar for the New Year will be with Joe LaBarbera on January 24th. We expect to hold this seminar in either Allenton or St. Lawrence. Final decision will be made in the next week.
“Nobody wakes up expecting to be the lead story on the evening news.” LaBarbera Media Group will provide a very exciting seminar for everyone that wants to be a better firefighter/officer. LaBarbera Media Group will teach you how to protect your reputation and your image with his “Face the media don’t fear them.” Be sure to invite your officials of the townships, villages, cities, emergency management, ems services, etc. This seminar will help all of us prepare for the “BIG NEWS DAY” in your community. We are limiting the size to the first 100 people. The class is open to those outside of our association for the same low price of $50.00 per person [includes continental breakfast, lunch, refreshments, and class materials]. This class normally has a cost of $175.00 per person, the Badger Firemen’s Association believes this is an important class and is offering it a very special price.
The ad hoc committee presented the guidelines for events that are using the Badger Firemen’s Association name. It was decided to table a vote on these guidelines to the Spring Meeting. Please review these guidelines and get your suggestions back to Ron Naab before January 1, 2009.
Christmas is coming along with many hunting seasons for a variety of species. Be sure to think and act safely. When you are interacting with others remember you are a firefighter/ems first responder and a member of a very prestigious group of people in our society. Your actions will not only reflect on you but also will determine what others will think about your fire department and those fire/ems associations you belong to.
Take time to thank your family for allowing you to be a part of your agency that helps others when they can no longer help themselves. Without their support we would not be able to do what we do when we do these “blessing on to others.”

ARE YOU READY TO ANSWER THESE THIRTEEN QUESTIONS? YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER THEM AFTER TAKING THIS COURSE WITH LABARBERA MEDIA:
1. Where does my city/township rank in the media market?
2. How is a story put together?
3. How do you hold a reporter accountable for a bad story?
4. How do you pitch stories without having to notify all media outlets?
5. How should we handle on site interviews?
6. What problems can “off duty” conduct present for us?
7. How should a media room be set up?
8. Why do reporters call to verify info rather than visit a scene and see for themselves?
9. What is reporter etiquette during a press conference or interview?
10. What types of press conferences can you hold? Question and answer? Statement only? Something else?
11. What time lines do reporters face? If they call at 10 A.M., is it o.k. for me to call them back at 3 p.m.?
12. Why is it important to build professional working relationships with reporters in this area?
13. Is it o.k. to refuse to work with a certain reporter?
